This talk challenges how U.S. schools have become settings more concerned with the quarantine and control of Black boys’ bodies, rather than their learning and development. Now arguably more than ever before, with the overrepresentation of Black males in suspension and expulsion rates in schools, which is symptomatic of Black male death in American society, particularly at the hands of police officers, the goal of this workshop is to offer a set of Relational Teaching Strategies to counteract in the dehumanizing ways that stereotypes associated with Black boys and men often contribute to their mistreatment in schools.
